Mudstone depositional environment

Shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock that forms from the compaction of silt and clay-size mineral particles that we commonly call "mud." This composition places shale in a category of sedimentary rocks known as " mudstones ." Shale is distinguished from other mudstones because it is fissile and laminated.

Mudstone depositional environment. In contrast, clastic sedimentary rocks with high ICV values indicate primary deposition in an active tectonic environment (Moradi et al., 2016). Black mudstone in Well CY1 has an ICV value ranging from 0.49 to 0.71, averagely 0.65 (Figure 8A; Table 1), indicating high rock maturity. This suggests a provenance of sediment recirculation in an ...

Argillaceous sandstone facies are best developed in delta front and plain environments. Silty mudstone facies are best developed in predelta environments. Mudstone facies are chiefly found in shore–shallow lake to predelta sedimentary environments. The inward boundary of mudstone facies represents the borderline of semi-deep lakes.
