These regions are the Canadian Shield, the Western Cordillera, the Canadian Arctic, the Appalachian Region, the Interior Plains, the Hudson Bay Lowlands and the St. Lawrence Lowlands., Along the southern border of Kansas, the Permian red beds have been exposed by erosion in the RED HILLS physiographic region (Figure 8). Beds of light-gray gypsum and dolomite cap the shale hills to make a ruggedly beautiful, butte-and-mesa topography unlike any other in Kansas (Figure 1, site 9).
